2012 release recap

Hey everyone! Gearing up to ride the momentum into 2013! Here are the 5 releases I was blessed to be a part of this year:

Shamik- Westward Rising vol II

This came out in February featuring collabs with 5 great producers from Western Canada. They have all done amazing things this year on their own projects and it was honour to work with them. I beatboxed, sang, MC'd on the tunes, and most of it was wrapped this time last year. *Bandcamp purchase link*

Grasp The Erro- In The Now EP

This was a 2 tune drum and bass EP that came out in April on Bombeatz Music (label out of Florida). Grasp featured my vocals on the title track with a high energy rollin tune called Whitness as the b-side. We managed to collaborate numerous times in the past 2 years! *Beatport purchase link*

---

Shamik- Future Passed

This was my solo concept EP that came out in July with every tune produced by Grasp The Erro. It's about life, death, time, and space...I'm really proud of how it turned out and thankful for how much support my peers showed towards the release. *Free download*

Shamik- 121212

This came out on 121212 (my 30th bday) a few weeks ago. I was sitting on a few tunes that I produced out of layers of my voice. I've been working on a bunch of music lately, but a lot of it is not beatbox related so I wanted to put these ones out together and then move on to the next project:) My friends Cher Olvera out of Edmonton and Quest Seraphim out of Vancouver were kind enough to share their vocal gifts on the EP..and I decided to release it/ call it 121212 to celebrate the auspicious day:) I hope it continues to spread! *Free download*

Jpod & Shamik- Vibes Alive

This also just came out on Dec 26 on Swing Set Sounds (Jpod's label out of Kelowna). He produced the tune and I performed a verse encouraging people to keep their eyes to the sky:) It has 2 versions of the song, a remix from All Good Funk Alliance, the instrumentals, and an unreleased Jpod tune called Switchback. It's out exclusively on Beatport and will be out everywhere else in a couple weeks:) *Beatport purchase link*

Much love! Lots more music to come in 2013! Happy new year:)

Jpod & Shamik: VIBES ALIVE

Today VIBES ALIVE, my collab with Jpod is released on Swing Set Sounds exclusively on Beatport.

It will be out on all other digital outlets in 2 weeks. Stoked that this is finally out! Preview the release below.

Here's the Beatport write-up on the release:

JPOD always maintans a solid foundation of big beats, crunchy bass and an overall crisp sound. This release has JPOD experimenting with faster tempos, bringing his flavor into the realm of midtempo with two versions of Vibes Alive. Shamik joins up in this release to provide uplifting lyrical content inspired by the desire for inner growth and forward progress. On the remix it's All Good Funk Alliance with yet another funky abstraction. Lastly JPOD pushes the tempo even further, approaching breakbeat tempo with Switchback. Graceful melodies set the stage only to have gnarly bass and epic chords take over.

Shamik - 121212

Hey everyone! Much love from Sydney! So I wanted to give away some music today...and the idea of doing so on my 30th with numerology on my side feels like a good plan:) Beatboxing is something that will always be close to me...whether I'm performing or using my sounds in music. I'm finding my style to be the weird side of hip hop and also the weird side of electronica which is a good place right now. Diving into production this year began with a lot of hurdles, but now I'm super hungry about the process:) I took the noises from my beatbox sample pack as well as fresh sounds for each song. I was lucky to have Cher Olvera from Edmonton pass through Vancouver right when the Footsteps tune needed one more layer. We've known each other since 2005 and it's about time we got to collaborate. Quest Seraphim put down a couple verses on Reason To Live, in one afternoon...and it was another vibe that finally happened after years of mutual respect for each other's music. Airing the Breath and Voices in my Head are almost opposites of each other with their night vs day / dark vs light feelings. I think the EP goes from being complex to simple throughout it, which pretty much sums up my brain and life:) The songs were all about 30-40 percent done before I went to Hawaii with my lovely lady. We had a great trip, and I worked on the EP sporadically while we were in Kauai. Upon my return to Vancouver and the beginning of my Aus planning, it really came together! It's all for you for free, so download away and please share with anyone who you think will be into it!

The tour in Australia has been going good so far. Kicked it off at Subsonic Festival in Barrington Tops, NSW. It was crazy hot while I was there. Jammed out with the Foreigndub guys for their Friday night slot..which proved to be one of the best time slots of the night. Here's a pic of Sam The Chemist and I:

Hyping up the crowd:

The sun actually started to come out around 5:45am so after the 17hr flight, 5 hr drive and not enough sleep..my 2pm set on Saturday after being in the sun all day was a tough task! I managed to make it through and had a good time!

It's been great to be back in Sydney. My hosts, Foreigndub, just celebrated their 10 year anniversary out here. They're more than a collective and record label...they have brought so many artists, bands, DJ's and newcomers to Sydney together. I'm thankful to be part of the crew and for a lot of opportunities to work on music while I'm here. Every year when I come back, it all kind of picks up where I left off. My Aussie friends have supported what I've been doing through every step of the evolution process. In Vancouver the crews are very well intertwined, and out here there's a great amount of comradery between the bands and DJ's. It's convenient that mostly everyone lives around Newtown just like how in Van the artists are scattered around Main St + Commercial Drive.

So here's what's up next...

Interview on FBi Radio for Foreigndub Airwayvs Dec 16. For more info...Sydney time 5-7pm, Vancouver time 10pm-12am on Dec 15.

Thanks to you all for being here with me on this journey! More news soon. Until next time...peace.

-BEATSMITH-

Last summer the Vancouver Film School shot a short documentary with a series of interviews about me and the art form of beatboxing. It wasn’t posted for awhile, because it was submitted to a few film festivals…not too sure how it did but it’s back up on Vimeo. There’s some footage of Grasp The Erro and I opening for DubFX at Five Sixty from last July, a bunch of songs from a few past releases (please note there are a couple errors in the track list which were hard to fix after the editing), and cool shots of Vancouver:) Big love to Rosalee Yagihara, Damon Pinter, Tony Zhou, and Chris Graham for their hard work…and for thinking of me for their project. Shouts to Nils from Beats Without Borders and Grasp for saying some nice things. Seems like forever ago, but mostly cause I’ve worked on so much new music since then:)

Enjoy.
